You Should Know
What kind of experience is required for a Contractors’
License?
You need four years’ work experience at journey level
or better within the past ten years or a combination of work
experience and education.
How do I verify my experience and can education, technical
training or apprenticeship be substituted?
You may qualify for the license by substituting apprenticeship
or technical training or other education for a portion of
the work experience. A degree is not necessary. You will need
to show transcripts for allowed courses in areas such as law,
math, accounting, construction technology, drafting, marketing,
etc..
Can I use my self-employed experience?
The Board will accept this experience with at least two work
experience certificates.
Do I have to reside in California to get and keep
my license?
There is no residency requirement in California.
Are there any financial requirements to meet?
There is a question on the application requiring your net
worth to be $2,500.00 or better.
