Important Facts

When and where are the exams given?
Exams are given daily in various locations throughout the State.

What are the costs to get and keep the license?
Original applications are $250.00(this includes the exam fee) License fee for two years is $150.00. We constantly monitor your application process with the Board.

What are the Bond requirements?
License bond values are subject to change by the Board. The current bond is $10,000.00. We process and issue the bond the same day requested.

How long will it take me to get my license?
The Board has taken as few as 4 weeks and as high as 8 months. We will advise you of their backlog at the time of enrollment. We monitor this daily for all our clients.

How many licenses may I be the qualifier for? (RME/RMO/QP)
The Board allows you to qualify up to three active license numbers at one time providing you own a minimum of 20% of each firm.

What if I want to operate the business as a Corporation?
We will first need to prepare and file the Articles of Incorporation to obtain your Secretary of State number. The application will then be filed under the Corporation name. We can also set up Foreign Corporations.

Are all the exams on a computer?
Yes, but don’t let that worry you. You don’t have to know anything about a computer and they will show you how to answer the multiple choice questions by choosing A,B,C or D.

Do I need Worker’s Compensation to get a license?
You may file a workers compensation exemption form if you have no employees.

Do I need a Liability insurance policy to get a license?
There is no requirement for liability policies at this time.

How do I obtain additional classifications?
After passing your first exam, you may then apply for any additional classification(s) you have the experience in.

Important Facts You Should Know

 

What kind of experience is required for a Contractors’ License?
You need four years’ work experience at journey level or better within the past ten years or a combination of work experience and education.

How do I verify my experience and can education, technical training or apprenticeship be substituted?
You may qualify for the license by substituting apprenticeship or technical training or other education for a portion of the work experience. A degree is not necessary. You will need to show transcripts for allowed courses in areas such as law, math, accounting, construction technology, drafting, marketing, etc..

Can I use my self-employed experience?
The Board will accept this experience with at least two work experience certificates.

Do I have to reside in California to get and keep my license?
There is no residency requirement in California.

 

Are there any financial requirements to meet?
There is a question on the application requiring your net worth to be $2,500.00 or better.
